When you start making preparations for your land or planting seeds, make sure it is in good condition. The soil has to be provided with nutrients, and since you won’t be sure of its PH level, neutralised, both of which can be achieved by adding compost to the soil. It will be a good idea to make your own compost from items you mostly have lying around anyway, such as dead leaves and other plant matter, vegetable and fruit peelings from the kitchen, plus manure. This saves you from taking the stuff to the landfill, plus you don’t need to spend money for the compost. Explore what you would like to plant before buying any seeds, so that you can be sure they will survive your environment. You can get veggies that are currently growing rather than buying seeds, only make sure the leaves are not wilted or discolored.
One of the greatest difficulties you will encounter are pests, but you can use horticultural oils to discourage them, as well as rely on them being eaten by birds, ladybugs, toads and other insects. Weeds, one other issue, can be dealt with by taking them out of the soil, for which activity you may wish to wear some gloves, and possibly knee-pads. You may also keep unwanted weeds away by preventing them from germinating, which you do by spraying corn meal gluten granules or horticultural vinegar on the ground, which has the added benefit of releasing nitrogen into the soil. The best time to spray these antidotes is just before the weeds come up, generally the early part of spring, or fall. If you have a seaweed or fish-based fertilizer, which comes in liquid form and is non-toxic, you can also use it to get rid of weeds. The fertilizer should also enhance your soil to the benefit of your vegetation, with phosphate, nitrogen and potash.
You can do your organic gardening in planting pots if you don’t have a backyard. Your planting pots should ideally be produced from clay, wood or plastic.
